Jay Young Promoted To Men's Basketball Associate Head Coach

Young is entering his fifth season on the Seawolves staff.

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Stony Brook men's basketball head coach Steve Pikiell announced on Monday that assistant coach Jay Young has been promoted to associate head coach. Young is entering his fifth season on the Seawolves staff.

"Jay has been an integral part of our building process at Stony Brook University and I am thrilled that we can reward him in this manner," Pikiell said. "Anyone who is around Jay can feel the passion he has for our program, the department and our institution.

Young helped the Seawolves to their best Division I season ever in 2008-09. Stony Brook finished 16-14 overall and 8-8 in the America East Conference, tying for fourth-place in the final regular season conference standings; the Seawolves best-ever America East Conference finish. The 16 overall wins and eight conference victories are the most for Stony Brook in its eight years as a member of the America East conference.

Young arrived at Stony Brook in June 2005 after five years as head coach at the University of New Haven, where he quickly turned around a program that produced just one winning season in the previous eight years. He guided the Chargers to back-to-back NCAA tournament appearances (2002-03, 2003-04) for the first time since the 1986-87 and 1987-88 seasons, returning the UNH program to regional and national prominence. Prior to New Haven, Young served as an assistant at Northeastern University for four seasons.

"I would like to sincerely thank Coach Pikiell and [Stony Brook Director of Athletics] Jim Fiore for this promotion," Young said. "I am very fortunate to work with a talented and dedicated group of coaches, staff and student-athletes on a daily basis. I am proud to represent such a tremendous University and look forward to continued success for many years."

Stony Brook begins its 2009-10 season on Friday, Nov. 13, traveling to take on Maryland-Eastern Shore. The Seawolves open up their home schedule on Monday, Nov. 16, hosting Mount Saint Mary at Pritchard Gymnasium.
