Doremus records 13 kills and a .423 hitting percentage
Brooklyn, N.Y. - Following a ten-day layoff between matches, Stony Brook University's volleyball team showed very little rust during its 3-0 (26-24, 25-15, 25-12) victory over Long Island University on Tuesday night. Senior Lisa Doremus (Glendale, Ariz.) led a potent offensive attack with 13 kills and a .423 hitting percentage. As a team the Seawolves hit a season-best .336, committing just nine errors. With the win, Stony Brook evens its record at 8-8 while Long Island falls to 3-12.
After a back-and-forth start to the first set, Stony Brook used a 13-6 run, including six straight at one point, to move in front 18-12. Long Island's offense, which registered three more kills than Stony Brook's, pulled the Blackbirds back into the game, eventually tying the score at 20-20 on a kill from Martina Racic. Long Island took the lead at 23-22 on Svetlana Simic's sixth kill of the match, but junior Ashley Headen (Alexandria, Va.) quickly knotted things back up with a kill of her own. A kill from senior Harmonie Calinda (Huntington, N.Y.) put the Seawolves back on top at 25-24 and senior Lindsey Gordon (N. Patchogue, N.Y.) and freshman Sally Downs (Coppell, Texas) combined on the game winning block to give the Seawolves the 1-0 set lead.
Long Island opened the second set with a 3-2 lead on a block by Racic and Zuzana Buchlova. That would be the Blackbirds last lead of the match, however, as the Seawolves cruised the rest of the way. SBU hit a match-high .407 in the second set, receiving four kills from both Headen and Doremus. The combination of an accurate attack and a great defensive effort kept Long Island from ever scoring more than two consecutive points during the Seawolves 25-15 victory.
Behind 11 digs from junior Jeanette Gibbs (Port Jefferson, N.Y.), Stony Brook held Long Island to a .065 attack percentage in the deciding third set. As a team, the Seawolves recorded 30 digs in the frame, while Doremus paced the offense with six kills.
Gibbs' 19 overall digs led three Seawolves with double-digit digs; Calinda recorded 14 while sophomore Bianca Hernandez (East Moriches, N.Y.) picked up ten. Freshman Corinne Perry (Northport, N.Y.) dished out 26 assists and sophomore Kelsey Sullivan (Hamilton, Va.) chipped in with 14.
Stony Brook begins America East play this Friday when it travels to take on Hartford. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m.
