Members of the Troy Police Department, working as part of an inter-agency detail, came upon Mayben, a 22-year-old Troy resident for whom they had a two-count indictment charging third-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance, a felony, according to a news release from the Troy police.
Mayben was arrested without incident, according to the release. During a subsequent search, he was found to be in possession of 3.4 grams of an off-white powder that field-tested positive for cocaine.
He was also charged with third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and fifth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, both felonies.
Mayben was to be held overnight, said Troy Police Sgt. Sean Kittle. He is to be arraigned Thursday morning in Troy Police Court and brought to the Rensselaer County Court for arraignment on the indictment.
The indictment was a result of a three-month investigation by the Special Operations Section, the news release stated.
Mayben was a starting guard and averaged 11.5 points per game last season for BU's America East Conference championship squad. He established a single-season school record for assists in a season.
"I just heard about it. I can't really comment," said BU basketball coach Kevin Broadus, reached by telephone late Wednesday night. "Nothing I can say.
"Right now, I can't even think straight. I'm just praying right now."
Broadus said he was informed of the incident when "somebody from school called me."
Mayben was recruited by Syracuse University out of Troy High School, but academic shortcomings prevented him from playing for the Orange. He instead began his college career at the University of Massachusetts, where he sat out one season before playing 31 games in the 2006-07 season.
He transferred to Hudson Valley Community College and played there for the 2007-08 season before moving on to Binghamton University for the 2008-09 season. Last March, he was named to the America East Conference All-Tournament team, and was a second-team All-Conference selection.
