MAYBEN DROPPED FROM BASKETBALL TEAM

BU's Tiki Mayben dismissed from basketball team following drug charges

Senior also charged with on campus marijuana posession

A Binghamton University basketball star was kicked off the team today after pleading not guilty in Troy to drug charges this morning.

Emanuel "Tiki" Mayben was freed on $30,000 bail today and returned to the Binghamton campus. When he returned to campus this afternoon he was permanently dismissed from the basketball team.

Binghamton University President Lois DeFluer delivered a strong message to the athletic department following the arrest.

“I am reiterating to our Athletic Director Joel Thirer and (Basketball) Coach Kevin Broadus that we will not tolerate this behavior in our student athletes. This behavior does not reflect the quality of our program and the hundreds of student athletes at Binghamton University" DeFleur said " We appreciate that Coach Broadus has given second-chances to athletes but our program can not take these risks and I have made this clear to both Thirer and Broadus.”

Emanuel "Tiki" Mayben, 22, returned home to Troy, Rensselaer County, on Wednesday to receive a car from his family as a gift, his attorney said.

Instead, Mayben, a starting senior guard for the team, was arrested on a two-count indictment charging him with third-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance, a felony.

“Emanuel Mayben has been permanently dismissed from the men’s basketball program. His arrest is both shocking and disappointing," Thirer said. "Our University and department will not tolerate this type of behavior. It’s a privilege to be a student-athlete and represent this University and we will not allow that privilege to be abused. Our coaches need to recruit student-athletes who value the opportunity that’s being given to them and I have communicated that directive to Coach Broadus loud and clear.”

In addition to felony drug-related charges, Binghamton University student athlete Emanuel "Tiki" Mayben was arrested Sept. 13 by State University Police at BU for unlawful possession of marijuana, a violation.

Specifics on the arrest were not available Thursday.
