Stony Brook University Baseball Picked to Repeat in Preseason Coaches Poll

Cambridge, Mass.– Stony Brook University’s baseball team was a unanimous pick to repeat as America East champions in the preseason coaches poll released by the conference office on Monday. Winners of two of the last three conference titles, the Seawolves received all five first-place votes as coaches could not vote for their own team.

Led by preseason all-american, junior right-hander Nick Tropeano (West Islip, N.Y.), the Seawolves return 17 letter-winners from last year’s squad that went 30-27 and defeated North Carolina State at the Myrtle Beach Regional for the programs first Division I NCAA tournament win. The America East Co-Pitcher of the Year, Tropeano went 8-4 with a 2.44 ERA and an America East best 106 batters in 99.2 innings.

Stony Brook also returns sophomore designated hitter William Carmona (Hempstead, N.Y.), junior right-hander Tyler Johnson (Chatsworth, Calif.) and senior third baseman Stephen Marino, who each earned a spot on the All-America East first team last season. The 2010 America East Rookie of the Year, Carmona led the conference in batting average (.387) and was named a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American.

Stony Brook open the 2011 season on Feb. 25-27 with a three-game series at Florida Atlantic.
