Crowley and Campbell each tally three goalsFinal Stats
Stony Brook, N.Y. - Sophomore Robbie Campbell (Delta, British Columbia) and junior Kevin Crowley (New Westminster, British Columbia) each had three goals, and senior Charlie Paar (Huntington, N.Y.) made 16 saves to lead the #7/6 (Nike/Inside Lacrosse/USILA Coaches) Stony Brook men's lacrosse team to a 10-6 win over Vermont in an America East Championship semifinal game. Senior Tom Compitello (Hauppauge, N.Y.) added two goals and an assist as the Seawolves (11-3) won their seventh straight game. Drew Philie and Cal Case had a goal and an assist apiece for Vermont (3-13).
Stony Brook, the top seed in the conference tournament, will await the winner of #2 UMBC and #3 Albany, which will be played tomorrow evening. The Seawolves will host the America East Championship game on Saturday afternoon at 1 pm at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium.
"We'll take the win at this stage of the season," head coach Rick Sowell said. "We did enough to get the job done. Charlie was great and made some incredible saves. Give Vermont credit; they had to travel back and forth in the last few days. We're glad to be back in the Championship game, but this time playing at home," Sowell said.
Crowley and Compitello each scored a pair of goals to give Stony Brook the lead midway into the second quarter. After Augie Remien made it 4-1, senior Steven Waldeck (Levittown, N.Y.) picked up a ground ball following a Paar save and found senior Michael Sopko (Shoreham, N.Y.) in transition. Sopko ran the length of the field and scored his first collegiate goal from about 15 yards away.
Paar finished the first half with six saves to hold Vermont, which scored four first-half goals against the Seawolves on Saturday, to just one.
Campbell and Belton each scored goals to make it 7-1. Stony Brook had scored six straight unassisted goals before Campbell's shot deflected off Belton's crosse and into the goal. Philie's goal made it 7-2, but two goals from Campbell and and a tally from Crowley put the game out of reach.
The Catamounts scored the game's final four goals, but Paar, who's posted a 7.34 goals against average in three career games against Vermont, made some incredible saves to hold back UVM.
Waldeck led all players with six ground balls. Junior Adam Rand (Niantic, Conn.) won 12 of 20 face-offs.
