Box Score
Orono, Maine - Sophomore Destiny Jacobs (Glen Burnie, Md.) scored 15 points and grabbed ten rebounds and senior Kirsten Jeter (Elmont, N.Y.) poured in a game-high 18 as Stony Brook University's women's basketball team rallied for a 64-59 victory over Maine on Saturday night at the Alfond Arena. With their first road victory of the season, the Seawolves are now 4-13 (2-3 America East) while Maine drops to 5-12 (1-4).
"I'm really proud of the effort we gave tonight," said head coach Michele Cherry. "We showed a lot of poise down the stretch, took care of the ball when we needed to and hit free throws when they counted the most. It was great to see Destiny step up tonight and have such a great game on the road."
A pair of three's by freshman Sam Landers (Springfield, Va.) helped Stony Brook jump out to an early 7-5 lead. Six unanswered points by Maine would put the Black Bears in front at 11-7 before the Seawolves bounced back scoring eight of the next 12 to knot the score at 15-15. Senior Joia Daniels (Silver Spring, Md.) hit the tying jumper at 11:44, but the Seawolves would go cold over the next 5:30 as Maine moved back in front, 21-15.
SBU would have a strong finish to the half, however, outscoring Maine 11-6 behind four points from Jacobs. Junior Misha Horsey (Wyncote, Pa.) capped the run and ended the half with an acrobatic jumper in the paint. Stony Brook's defense forced the Black Bears into five turnovers during the stretch and 28 overall for the game.
The second half started with the two teams trading baskets as the lead was exchanged five different times. Stony Brook's defense kick started its offense as the Seawolves turned three steals into fastbreak layups to pull in front 38-35 with 14:11 left. Maine's Kristin Baker kept the Black Bears within striking distance with three timely three pointers, the last of which started an 11-2 run for Maine.
Trailing by as many as five with under five minutes to go, SBU clawed its way back into the game pulling within one at 51-50 on a three-point play from Jeter at the 3:50 mark. After trading baskets, another steal by the Seawolves turned into a layup for Jeter, regaining the lead for SBU at 56-55. Clutch free throw shooting by Jacobs and Horsey down the stretch helped ice the game for Stony Brook as it held on for the 64-59 victory.
Stony Brook returns to action on Tuesday, hosting Albany at Pritchard Gymnasium at 7:00 p.m. For ticket information, go to www.goseawolves.org or call 631-632-WOLF.
