With the victory, Stony Brook improves to 12-7 overall and 4-2 in the America East.
"We got a lot of good contributions from a lot of guys today," Stony Brook head coach Steve Pikiell said. "We really played well on the defensive end of the court in the second half against a very good offensive team. Overall, it was a terrific effort from our guys and it gives us some confidence as we get ready for Vermont on Thursday."
Dougher grabbed seven rebounds to go along with the 23 points for the Seawolves, who out-rebounded UMBC 50-28. Senior Muhammad El-Amin (Lansing, Mich.) added 20 points for Stony Brook, while junior Chris Martin (Springfield Gardens, N.Y.) chipped in with 12 points and a career-high eight rebounds. Sophomore Dallis Joyner (Norfolk, Va.) grabbed a career-best 12 boards including seven of the Seawolves 25 offensive rebounds.
Stony Brook jumped to an 11-3 lead just three minutes in behind five early points from Brenton. The Seawolves lead grew to 16 on a three from sophomore Danny Carter (London, England) with 13:29 left before Shawn Grant knocked down a three to cut the SBU lead to 20-7.
UMBC eventually closed within 12 on another Grant three but Dougher drilled a three on the other end and Brenton then hit one of two free throws to put SBU up 28-12 midway through the half. UMBC answered with seven straight points to get within nine but Dougher hit a floater in the lane and Carter then followed with a dunk off a beautiful feed from freshman Preye Preboye (Springfield, Mass.).
Stony Brook still led by 13 following an alley-oop dunk from Martin to Brenton on an in-bounds play beneath the hoop before Chauncey Gilliam hit a tough runner in the lane to make it 38-27. Dougher answered with a three from the right corner to push the SBU lead to 14 but the Retrievers scored the final eight points of the half to close within 44-38 at the break.
Martin got the Seawolves off to a quick start in the second half as he stole the ball from Gilliam and took it the length of the court for a dunk. An Adrian Satchell lay-up with 15:57 to go cut the Stony Brook lead to 50-45 but Dougher then scored seven straight points over the next two and a half minutes to boost the SBU lead to 12.
UMBC got no closer than seven over the next several minutes until Robbie Jackson and Matt Spadaforda connected on back-to-back jumpers to trim the Stony Brook lead to 68-62 with three minutes remaining. The Retrievers nearly cut the SBU lead to four on their next possession but Brenton blocked a Chris De La Rosa lay-up attempt, leading to an El-Amin three-point play with 1:48 remaining.
The Retrievers would get no closer than eight the rest of the way as the Seawolves improved to 7-1 at Pritchard Gymnasium, matching its best start at home since 2000-01. Stony Brook out-scored the Retrievers 40-22 in the paint and turned the ball over just eight times.
