Jeter scores 24 and grabs 12 rebounds
Baltimore, Md. - Junior Kirsten Jeter (Elmont, N.Y.) scored 24 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as Stony Brook University's women's basketball team defeated UMBC, 74-56, on Thursday night in the RAC Arena. With the victory, SBU grabs sole possession of fourth-place in the America East while leveling its record to 4-4 in conference play and 6-14 overall. UMBC now stands at 9-12 (3-5).
"We put forth a total team effort tonight," said head coach Michele Cherry. "At times our defense was as good as it has been all year and we did a lot of nice things on offense. We received contributions from everybody tonight, led by Jeter's impressive performance."
Stony Brook showed a lot of hustle early on, grabbing five offensive rebounds and forcing UMBC into four turnovers as it led 12-5 5:19 into the game. The Seawolves quickly added onto their advantage with some sharp shooting, especially from beyond the arc. SBU connected on three of its first four three-point attempts, including one by freshman Sam Landers (Springfield, Va.) which gave the Seawolves a ten point lead with 13:24 remaining.
SBU's touch from the outside would continue as Jeter knocked down her third triple of the half at the 5:07 mark to put the Seawolves on top 37-18. Stony Brook would maintain its double-digit advantage for the remainder of the half as it connected on six of eight three-pointers.
UMBC would open the second half on a 7-3 run and cut the Seawolves lead to 12 before SBU responded with back-to-back buckets by sophomore Destiny Jacobs (Glen Burnie, Md.) and Jeter. Leading 53-38 with 12:10 remaining, senior Crystal Rushin (Valley Stream, N.Y.) scored six of the next seven points for the Seawolves to help push the lead back to 19.
Stony Brook would continue to pour it on as Jeter connected on her fourth three of the night with 4:59 left to put the Seawolves up by 69-48. SBU's lead would grow to as many as 23 on a layup by junior Misha Horsey (Wyncote, Pa.). SBU shot 43% for the game while pulling down 51 total rebounds. It's the second time this season the Seawolves have pulled down 50 or more rebounds.
Jeter's four threes were a new career high and she fell just one point shy of tying her career high for points. She earned the America East Player of the Game honors for Stony Brook, while Michelle Kurowski scored a team-high 13 for UMBC to earn the honor for the Retrievers.
Stony Brook's next game will be a home contest against Hartford on Saturday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. The game is part of "Stony Brook Basketball Alumni Day" and precedes the men's basketball contest at 7:00 p.m.
