Stony Brook, N.Y. - Seven home games, featuring a matchup with BIG EAST opponent St. John's, highlights Stony Brook University's women's basketball 2009-10 non-conference schedule, which was released by head coach Michele Cherry on Thursday. The 12-game schedule features games against two 2009 NCAA Tournament participants and teams from seven different conferences, including the Ivy League, BIG EAST, Mountain West and Atlantic Coast Conferences.
"I'm very excited about our non-conference schedule for the upcoming season," said Cherry. We are fortunate enough to have seven home non-conference games which I feel will be beneficial to our young team. However, there are no easy games on this schedule; we will be challenged. Overall, our schedule will be arduous, yet, one that I feel will help prepare us for an always difficult America East Conference."
Stony Brook opens the 2009-10 season with three straight home contests, starting with Princeton on November 13. St. John's returns to Stony Brook for the first time since 2006-07 on Nov. 15, followed by Sacred Heart on Nov. 17. The Seawolves take their first road trip of the season on Nov. 21, traveling to Pittsburgh, Pa. to play Robert Morris. After hosting Air Force on Nov. 27, Stony Brook will travel to play Monmouth December 2.
The final six games of the non-conference schedule start off with three-straight home contests, before three-straight road games. St. Francis (N.Y.) starts the home-stretch off with an afternoon game on Dec. 6. The Seawolves then host Fairfield on Dec. 9 and Dartmouth on Dec. 11 before traveling to Hempstead, N.Y. to play Long Island rival Hofstra on Dec. 21. SBU then heads south to College Park, Md. to play 2009 Elite Eight participant Maryland on Dec. 27 before facing UNC Wilmington on Dec. 28.
