Men's Basketball Announces 2009-10 Non-Conference Schedule

Seawolves will travel to take on St. John's on Dec. 2.

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Road contests against Big East opponent St. John's and Atlantic-10 opponents Rhode Island and Fordham, along with five games at Pritchard Gymnasium, highlight the 2009-10 Stony Brook men's basketball non-conference schedule released by head coach Steve Pikiell on Wednesday.
"I think we have put together a competitive non-conference schedule that will challenge our team and give us a good idea of things we need to work on as we get ready to play in what will be a very tough America East conference," Pikiell said.
Stony Brook will travel to Queens to take on local rival St. John's on Dec. 2 in its first meeting with the Red Storm since the 2005-06 season. SBU will square off against another local program on Dec. 8, traveling to the Bronx to take on Fordham Rams. It will be the first ever meeting between the schools.
Stony Brook opens the season on Nov. 13 at Maryland-Eastern Shore before returning home to take on Mt. St. Mary College on Nov. 16 in its home opener. Stony Brook then hits the road for a quick two-game road swing against Wagner (Nov. 21) and Rhode Island (Nov. 24), which finished second in the A-10 last season.
Following a home game against New Jersey Tech (Nov. 28) and a road contest against Lehigh (Nov. 30), the Seawolves will take on the Red Storm. It is the 10th straight season that Stony Brook will face a Big East opponent.
After hosting Columbia on Dec. 5, the Seawolves embark on a three-game road trip against Fordham, Colgate (Dec. 12) and Sacred Heart (Dec. 20). Stony Brook then returns home on Dec. 28 to take on Saint Peter's.
SBU will wrap up its non-conference slate with a New Year's Eve matinee against Holy Cross at Pritchard Gymnasium. It will be SBU's first ever meeting with Holy Cross, who advanced to the Patriot League title game last season.
In 2008-09 Stony Brook recorded its most overall wins (16) and conference victories (eight) in its eight seasons in the America East Conference. SBU returns nine letterwinners from that squad including senior Muhammad El-Amin (Lansing, Mich.) and sophomores Tommy Brenton (Columbia, Md.) and Bryan Dougher (Scotch Plains, N.J.).

The Seawolves leading scorer last season (15.7 ppg), El-Amin was a 2009 All-America East second team selection. Brenton and Dougher were named to the America East All-Rookie team a season ago as Brenton led the America East in rebounding during conference play (9.7 rpg) and Dougher set the Division I program record for points in a season by a freshman (335).
The 2009-10 America East portion of the schedule will be announced by the conference office at a later date.
