Seawolves begin postseason action at LaValle Stadium on Sunday at 6 p.m.
Cambridge, Mass. - Junior Marisa Viola (Cutchogue, N.Y.) and freshman Colleen McKenna (Manorville, N.Y.) were named the America East Conference's Women's Soccer Goalkeeper and Rookie of the Year, respectively, the conference office announced on Wednesday afternoon. The Seawolves placed a program-record three players on the All-America East first team as senior Brooke Barbuto (Syracuse, N.Y.) was joined by Viola and McKenna on the 11-player squad. McKenna was also selected to the conference's All-Rookie team along with freshman Alexis Lindo (York, Pa.).
Viola finished the regular season ranked seventh in nation with 7.5 saves per game as she joined Cindy Bennett '06 as the only players in school history to earn the conference's goalkeeper of the year award. She also posted four shutouts this season and now ranks second in program history with 20 career shutouts.
McKenna, the only freshman named to the conference's first team, was first in the America East in goals and points per game (0.62, 1.46 pg). A three-time Rookie of the Week pick and the Seawolves first Rookie of the Year selection since Bennett in 2002, she also tied for the conference lead in goals (eight) and points (19).
Barbuto was one of two players to earn first team honors for the second consecutive year as she led the Seawolves with a career-high six assists in addition to ranking second on the team with five goals and 16 points. The senior midfielder started all 17 games for Stony Brook and was a two-time America East Player of the Week.
A freshman defender, Lindo started all 16 games she appeared in as the Seawolves placed a player on the All-Rookie squad for the eighth straight season.
Stony Brook is the No. 2 seed in this week's America East Championships and will host the winner of Thursday's first-round game between No. 3 New Hampshire and No. 6 Binghamton on Sunday, Nov. 2 at LaValle Stadium. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
