LIBERTY SPOILS STONY BROOK'S BIG SOUTH DEBUT, 33-0

Seawolves Return Home Next Week For Homecoming

Lynchburg, Va. - Liberty's high-powered offense proved to be the difference here today as the Flames spoiled the Big South debut of Stony Brook with a 33-0 victory. The 15th ranked Flames rolled up 466 yards of offense and took a 17-0 lead at the half on their way to the win. Freshman Dayne Hoffman (Ada, Mich.) completed 13 of his 23 attempts for 142 yards to lead the Stony Brook offense.
"My hat goes off to Liberty," said Stony Brook head coach Chuck Priore. "Coach Rocco has a very well coached team. We knew going into the game they were not going to make a mistake. They execute their fundamentals very well, that is the mark of a good team. We are struggling to be that type of team."
Liberty (6-0, 2-0 Big South) took the opening kick off and drove deep into Stony Brook territory. A Flames touchdown was erased on an illegal block, and the Seawolves held them to a 27-yard field goal. After holding Stony Brook (1-5, 0-1 Big South) on its first drive of the day, Liberty used six plays to score again, this time finding the end zone on a 29-yard scamper by Mike Brown that made it 10-0 with 1:37 left in the first.
Stony Brook drove into Liberty territory on its next drive, getting solid runs from freshman Edwin Gowins (Bellport, N.Y.) and a key pass from Hoffman to senior Dwayne Eley (Bowie, Md.). The drive stalled at the Liberty 33, however, and the Seawolves were forced to punt. Liberty then made it three-for-three on its drives as it rode the strength of the running of Rashad Jennings to drive down the field, scoring on a 14-yard Jennings run around the left side that put his team on top 17-0 with 12:05 left in the half.

On Stony Brook's next possession senior Lynell Suggs (Bronx, N.Y.) made an eight-yard reception on the drive's first play that put him above the 2,000-yard mark for his career, making him the third receiver in SBU history to reach that mark. That started another Seawolves drive that took them over the 50-yard line. Thanks to another key third-down pass, this time to Suggs, Stony Brook drove down to the Liberty 23, but senior Luke Gaddis' (East Patchogue, N.Y.) 41-yard field goal attempt was wide to the left. The Seawolves defense held the Liberty off the board for the remainder of the half and SBU still trailed 17-0.
A Stony Brook fumble proved costly on its first possession in the second half as Liberty recovered at the Stony Brook 43 and took it in from there, with Jennings scoring his second TD of the game. The extra point was botched, but the still Flames extended their lead to 23-0. Liberty tacked on another score on its next possession, driving 82 yards to take a 30-0 lead that put the game out of reach.
Stony Brook will return to action on October 18 when it hosts Charleston Southern as part of Homecoming festivities at SBU. Game time at LaValle Stadium is set for 3:00 p.m.
