Stony Brook, N.Y. (Jan. 8, 2012) – Stony Brook University's women's basketball team dropped its second straight game, falling to the Albany Great Danes, 57-32, in an America East conference match-up on Sunday afternoon at Pritchard Gymnasium. Ebony Henry led Albany with 20 points and six rebounds as the the Great Danes (9-7, 3-0 AE) shot 54.5 percent from the field. Senior Destiny Jacobs (Glen Burnie, Md.) led SBU (4-12, 1-2 AE) with nine points.
"Give Albany credit, they're a terrific basketball team and they showed it today," Stony Brook head coach Beth O'Boyle said. "We'll go back and work hard at practice this week and get ready for UMBC on Thursday."
Albany bolted out to an 11-4 lead five minutes in but Stony Brook held the Great Danes to just one field goal over the next eight minutes and clawed to within 13-10 on a put-back hoop from senior Whitney Davis (Muskegon, Mich.).
Lindsay Lowrie's second three of the game ended the Albany drought and sparked a 12-2 run that gave the Great Danes a 25-12 lead with three minutes to go in the half.
Junior Sam Landers (Springfield, Va.) drilled a three with just over a minute left to halt the Albany run and Jacobs followed with a baseline jumper as SBU went into the break trailing 26-17.
Stony Brook shot 40 percent in the opening half but the Great Danes shot 62.5 percent and went 4-for-6 from three.
The Seawolves trimmed the Albany lead to 30-23 six minutes into the second half following two free throws from junior Jessica Previlon (Brooklyn, N.Y.).
But Albany held the Seawolves scoreless over the next eight minutes, scoring 20 straight points to put the game away. Henry had 12 points in the run.
The Great Danes out-rebounded Stony Brook, 28-20, and scored 26 points of 23 Seawolves turnovers.
Stony Brook return to action on Thursday, traveling to take on UMBC. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
