Brown outlasts Stony Brook Football, 21-20

Final Stats
Stony Brook, N.Y. - Despite 153 yards and a touchdown from junior Miguel Maysonet (Riverhead, N.Y.), and 246 rushing yards as a team, a 12-yard touchdown pass from Kyle Newhall-Caballero to Tellef Lundevall and the point after with just over three minutes to play gave Brown a one-point lead as it escaped with a 21-20 win over Stony Brook on Saturday evening.
Maysonet recorded his sixth career 100-yard game and the fourth game with more than 150 rushing yards.
Newhall-Caballero finished with 292 yards and three touchdowns, two to Alexander Tounkara-Kone, who finished with 149 receiving yards.
Despite 133 penalty yards, Stony Brook was within striking distance in the final minutes. Down one, the Seawolves started their final drive on the 45. A nine-yard rush from Maysonet put Stony Brook into Brown territory at the 46. A 12-yard reception by junior Jordan Gush (Dallas, Texas) advanced the ball to the 33, but the drive stalled there. A loss of five on first down and two incomplete passes brought up fourth and 15 from the 38. Junior Wesley Skiffington (Brandon, Fla.), who connected on field goals from 38 and 32 yards, respectively, missed from 55, giving the ball back to Brown.
"I'm very disappointed in the loss," coach Chuck Priore said. "I thought we played well enough to win, but some costly penalties on their last drive hurt us. As I said to the team after the game, there's no shame in losing. To play this game takes courage, and our guys know that."
Sophomore Jawara Dudley (Roosevelt, N.Y.) finished with a career-high 14 tackles and a sack. The defense, which allowed only 36 rushing yards to UTEP, was even better against Brown as the Bears gained 28 yards on the ground.

Maysonet's 26-yard rush right up the middle gave Stony Brook its biggest lead of the game, 17-7. Brown then went three and out, but Nathan Lovett's punt was fumbled by the Seawolves and recovered at the Stony Brook 46. On the next play, Brown executed a flea flicker as Newhall-Caballero found Tounkara-Kone for the touchdown.
Stony Brook took a 20-14 lead on Skiffington's 32-yard field goal with 8:58 to go in the game. With 151 points, Skiffington is six shy of setting the Stony Brook record for most points by a kicker.
Junior Kyle Essington (Chino Hills, Calif.) scored his second rushing touchdown in three games, scoring on a 18-yard run keyed by a block from junior Brett Arce (Coalinga, Calif.).
The Seawolves continue their homestand with a non-conference game against Lafayette next Saturday at 6 p.m. It is Wolfstock 2011, Stony Brook's annual homecoming event. For tickets and more information, visit www.GoSeawolves.org.
