"We are very excited to have Ron join the program," Pikiell said. "He is a terrific athlete and an all-round versatile player. He has the ability to drive to the basket, pull up the three-pointer and make his free throws. He also has good hands, is a strong rebounder and plays good defense. And most importantly, he's a good person, and he will fit in well with his teammates and the community. He's going to make an impact at Stony Brook."
Bracey, who joins Stony Brook with two years of basketball eligibility remaining, averaged 23.9 points per game at Kellogg last season and was named a second-team All-National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) All-American. He was also the Michigan Community College Athletic Association (MCCAA) Western Conference Player of the Year and was named first-team MCCAA All-Region and All-Western Conference. At season's end, he competed in the MCCAA All-Star Game and was named the MVP after scoring 32 points and adding five rebounds, five assists and three steals. It was his second consecutive All-Star Game MVP honor, the first player in league history to do so.
In two seasons at Kellogg under head coach Melvin McKnight, Bracey scored 1,170 points, the first player at Kellogg to reach 1,000 points in over a decade. As a freshman in 2010, he scored 38 points against Lake Michigan College and finished the season averaging 20.0 points and 8.7 rebounds per game en route to second-team MCCAA All-Western Conference honors. This past season as a sophomore, Bracey scored 40 points against Jackson CC.
"The first time I met Ron, he was very eager to reach his goal of playing in Division I," McKnight said. "He never missed a practice, never missed a game and never caused trouble. Once he learned our system, he turned out to be a very good player. I'm proud of him for working hard to reach his goals, and I hope he continues to work hard."
Bracey is a native of Cincinnati and graduated from Withrow High School on the east side of the city. Under head coach Walt McBride, Bracey was a part of back-to-back district championship teams that combined for a 41-11 record over two seasons.
Bracey joins a Stony Brook team that will return 12 letter winners from last season's team that advanced to the America East Championship final for the first time in program history and finished ninth in the nation in field goal percentage defense.
