West Hartford, Conn. - Junior Robbie Campbell (Delta, British Columbia) scored a career-high four goals and senior Timmy Trenkle (Commack, N.Y.) added three as the #14 Stony Brook men's lacrosse team rallied past Hartford, 10-8, in an America East game.
"I saw a lot open up and got some scoring chances," Campbell said. "Coach put me in on offense and I did what I think I do best."
Campbell scored all four of his goals in the fourth quarter as the Seawolves (6-3, 2-0) outscored the Hawks (7-4, 1-1), 7-1, in the final frame. Campbell, who started every game during his first two years, came off the bench to score all four of his goals unassisted.
Trenkle tied his career-high in goals for his second hat trick of the season.
"I was real disappointed in the team's play through the first three quarters," coach Rick Sowell said. "But we've shown a tendency to come back in the fourth quarter, and this time we pulled it out. I'm proud of the guys for showing a lot of grit."
After a 2-2 first half, Hartford opened a 6-3 lead with the help of three goals from Aiden Genik. But Stony Brook started winning the fourth-quarter face-offs and tied the game at six with 13:02 left in the fourth quarter. Campbell scored two goals just 34 seconds apart followed by a goal from Trenkle 50 seconds later.
Hartford took leads of 7-6 and 8-7, but Stony Brook answered with a goal each time. It took its first lead of the game, 9-8, after Campbell's third goal of the game, an unassisted tally with 8:15 left in the game.
"Robbie was huge," Sowell said. "We saw some things on film that we thought we'd be able to use through Robbie, and his goals turned out to be the turning point."
Campbell scored again with 4:51 left in regulation to give the Seawolves a two-goal lead, 10-8.
Senior Rob Camposa (Syosset, N.Y.) made nine saves, including a point-blank save with 51 seconds left.
Stony Brook spotted Hartford a 2-0 lead before junior Kyle Belton (Langley, British Columbia) and senior Tom Compitello (Hauppauge, N.Y.) each scored goals to tie the game.
Stony Brook returns home to take on New York State rival Binghamton on April 16. Face-off is 7:00 p.m.
