Vermont rallies for 68-50 victory over women's hoops

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Senior Kirsten Jeter (Elmont, N.Y.) and sophomore Sam Landers (Springfield, Va.) each scored 13 points but the Vermont Catamounts used a 14-0 second half run to rally for a 68-50 victory over the Stony Brook University women's basketball team on Saturday at Pritchard Gymnasium.
Jeter also had eight rebounds and six steals and was named Stony Brook's America East Player of the Game. Tonya Young had 19 points and 15 rebounds and was named Vermont's America East Player of the Game.
 
Stony Brook (4-18, 1-9 AE) led 44-41 with 7:52 left but went scoreless over the next three and a half minutes as Vermont scored 14 straight points to take 55-44 lead. Junior Tamiel Murray (Teneck, N.J.) hit one of two free throws to end the drought but Kristine Lalonde answered with a lay-up that kick started a 12-1 Catamount spurt that put the game away.
Vermont (3-20, 3-7 AE) shot 54.8 percent in the second half and 44.3 percent for the game. The Seawolves were held to 32.8 percent shooting and were out-rebounded, 44-40.
UVM jumped to a 9-2 lead five minutes in but the Seawolves answered with a 10-2 run over the next four minutes to take a 12-11 advantage. Jeter had seven points in the run.
The Catamounts rallied to take an 18-17 lead before SBU re-gained the lead on a fast-break hoop from junior Whitney Davis (Muskegon, Mich.) with 7:40 left in the first half. Neither team scored over the next three minutes before a long jumper from Murray gave SBU a three-point lead.
An Ashley Hoyt three tied the game at 24 with just over a minute to go before sophomore Gerda Gatling (Woodbridge, Va.) hit one of two free throws to send the Seawolves into the break in front, 25-24.

 

 

Stony Brook came out strong to start the second half, scoring the first eight points of the period to take a 33-24 lead. The run was highlighted by a beautiful dish from Davis to Jeter for a wide open lay-up.
 
Vermont used an 11-3 run to climb within one with 8:30 remaining and had a chance to take the lead following a Seawolves turnover. But junior Destiny Jacobs (Glen Burnie, Md.) blocked a Young shot and then ran the length of the court for an easy lay-up off a feed from Landers to give SBU a 44-41 lead.
