Men's hoops falters vs. BU 62-49

Stats

Boston University's John Holland and Darryl Partin combined to score 36 points as the Stony Brook men's basketball team suffered a 62-49 loss to the Terriers at sold out Pritchard Gym Friday night, snapping a two-game winning streak. Bryan Dougher (Scotch Plains, N.J.) led the Seawolves with 17 points and became Stony Brook's all-time leader in three-pointers with his 222nd career triple.
The Seawolves slip to 9-13 overall and 4-6 in America East, dropping them into a tie for fifth place with Albany. The Terriers strengthen their third-place position at 7-4 and are now 12-13 overall.
"We didn't play well tonight," head coach Steve Pikiell said. "It was a physical game, and we struggled getting the ball inside to our bigs. I give them credit, they played a good game."
Stony Brook had a decent rhythm on offense early on, making six of its first 13 field goal attempts. Marcus Rouse (Upper Marlboro, Md.) grabbed a defensive rebound and raced down the court to knock down a fastbreak jumper that gave the Seawolves an 11-9 lead with 9:33 left in the first half.
But Boston University took the lead a few minutes later on Matt Griffin's three-pointer at 6:22 to put the Terriers on top 14-13. They led until Danny Carter (Windsor, England) sank a three-pointer at 1:02 to tie the game at 22-22, but Patrick Hazel sent the Terriers into the locker room with a 24-22 advantage after a layup off a Griffin assist.
In the second half, Rouse pulled SBU within one with a three-pointer, but the Terriers went on a 16-3 run as the Seawolves missed eight consecutive shots. Holland had seven points during the run, and Partin hit the free throws that made it a 14-point game at 13:44. At 12:32, Hazel slammed home a dunk to give the Terriers their largest lead of the game, 15 points, at 44-29.

The Seawolves made a run late as Dougher rattled off a three-pointer and a pair of free throws on back-to-back possessions to get Stony Brook within five, 50-45, with 5:29 to play. However, the Terriers had an answer as Partin wove his way around defenders for a running jumper, and D.J. Irving converted a Dave Coley (Brooklyn, N.Y.) turnover into layup at 4:03, putting BU back on top by nine, 54-45, effectively ending the game.

The Terriers dominated on the inside, leading in points in the paint 32-14. Hazel, BU's America East Player of the Game, played a big part with 12 points on 6-of-8 shooting, all in the paint. Partin finished with a game-high 19 points, but also had seven turnovers. Holland had 17 points and seven rebounds. BU outrebounded the Seawolves 39-29.
Dougher, SBU's America East Player of the Game, finished with five makes on 11 attempts for his 17 points and has scored in double figures in five straight contests. Rouse and Coley added nine points for a Seawolves team that shot only 35.8 percent from the field and 46.2 percent (6-for-13) from the free throw line.
The Seawolves have a quick turnaround as they will play at Vermont Sunday at 1 p.m
