Jeter leads Women's Basketball past Maine

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Senior Kirsten Jeter (Elmont, N.Y.) scored a game-high 26 points and the Stony Brook University women's basketball team withstood a late Maine rally to defeat the Black Bears, 66-62, on Saturday at Stony Brook Arena.

Jeter also pulled down seven rebounds and had a career-high seven steals. The Seawolves (5-19, 2-10 AE) scored 30 points off 32 Maine turnovers and went 24-for-40 from the foul line. Sophomore Juanita Cochran (Saginaw, Mich.) added 10 points and six rebounds and sophomore Sam Landers (Springfield, Va.) chipped in with 10 points and dished out five assists.

Stony Brook led 60-47 with five minutes left but Maine went on a 9-1 run over the next three minutes to cut the Stony Brook lead to five. Cochran then twice split a pair of free throws over the next minute to push the Seawolves lead to seven.

Maine (3-22, 1-12 AE) got within three on a lay-up from Ashleigh Roberts with 23 seconds left. But Jeter hit two free throws to make it 65-60 before Katelyn Vanderhoff hit a short jumper with 15 seconds remaining.

Landers hit the first of two free throws to make it a four-point game but then missed the second. Sophomore Gerda Gatling (Woodbridge, Va.) grabbed the offensive rebound though as the Seawolves held on for the victory.

Both team struggled to score in the early going, with the Seawolves holding a 6-5 lead six minutes in. The score was tied at 12 midway though the half but junior Whitney Davis (Muskegon, Mich.) followed with a driving lay-up to kick start an 8-0 Stony Brook spurt.

Maine closed within four on jumper from Roberts with five minutes before Jeter scored four straight points to push the SBU lead back to eight. The Black Bears made it 30-26 on a four-point play from Amber Smith but the Seawolves scored the final five points of the half to take a nine-point lead into the break.

The Black Bears cut the Stony Brook lead to eight early in the second half on a three from Vanderhoff but the Seawolves went on a 13-2 run over the next six minutes to take a 52-33 lead with 11:30 left. Maine held Stony Brook scoreless over the next four and half minutes though and cut the SBU lead to 10 on a Brittany Williams jumper with 7:25 remaining.
Gatling finally ended the Stony Brook drought with a foul-line jumper to push the SBU lead back to 12. A three from Tanna Ross made it 56-47 and the Black Bears then forced a Stony Brook turnover.

But Jeter stole the ball in the Maine backcourt and was then fouled going to hoop by Vanderhoff. She knocked down the two free throws and the Seawolves then forced another turnover in the backcourt, leading to a Jeter hoop that made it 60-47. Jeter and Roberts were named the America East Players of the Game for their respective teams

The Seawolves return to action on Thursday, traveling to take on Albany. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
