Vermont Edges Women's Hoops, 57-49

Burlington, Vt. - Junior Whitney Davis (Muskegon, Mich.) scored a career-high 19 points but Tonya Young had 20 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Vermont Catamounts to a 57-49 victory over the Stony Brook University women's basketball team on Wednesday at Patrick Gymnasium.
Davis went 7-for-12 from the field and 5-for-7 from the foul line while senior Kirsten Jeter (Elmont, N.Y.) added 12 points, 10 rebounds and five steals. Lauren Buschmann chipped in with 16 points and eight rebounds for the Catamounts (1-15, 1-2 AE).
SBU (3-12, 0-3 AE) trailed by six with just less than four minutes remaining before Davis converted a three-point play to bring the Seawolves within three. Lauren Wheeler answered with a three to push the Vermont lead to 48-42 with 3:08 left and Buschmann then hit two free throws with 1:25 left to make it 50-42.
Davis hit two free throws with 1:02 left and then scored another hoop with 51.7 seconds remaining following two more free throws from Buschmann. Wheeler hit one of two freebies on the other end and the Seawolves then turned it over on their next possession.
Wheeler followed with two more free throws before sophomore Sam Landers (Springfield, Va.) drilled a three with 32.7 seconds left to make it 55-49. But Buschmann hit one of two free throws and SBU then turned it over on its next possession as the Catamounts went on to eight-point victory.
The Seawolves jumped to a 6-0 lead, holding Vermont scoreless over the first 5:05 of the game. UVM scored four of the next six points but Davis then swooped down the lane for an easy lay-up to push the Stony Brook lead back to six.
Vermont answered with a 13-3 run though to take a 17-13 advantage as Stony Brook went over 10 minutes without a field goal. An inside hoop from sophomore Juanita Cochran (Saginaw, Mich.) with 2:15 left ended the drought before Young converted a three-point play to give UVM its largest lead of the game to that point.

But Davis hit one of two free throws with just under a minute left and then hit a runner in the lane with time winding down as UVM clung to a two-point lead at the break. Davis scored seven first-half points for the Seawolves, who held Vermont to 30 percent (7-for-23) shooting over the first 20 minutes. Young scored 14 of Vermont's 20 first half points.
UVM scored the first six points of the second half to take a 26-18 lead before Landers scored the Seawolves first hoop of the period. Both teams went the next four minutes without a field goal before sophomore Gerda Gatling (Woodbridge, Va.) hit a jumper in the lane to bring Stony Brook within three with 13 minutes remaining.
Vermont led 30-25 with 11:30 remaining but Davis hit one of two free throws and the Seawolves then forced a turnover in the backcourt, leading to a Jeter hoop. Vermont scored four straight points to push the lead to six but Jeter hit two free throws and Landers then buried a three following another Catamount turnover to bring SBU within one.
Vermont scored the next five points to take a 39-33 lead before Jeter scored on a spin move in the lane with 7:30 to go The Seawolves forced a miss on Vermont's ensuing possession but Kelli Hier grabbed the rebound and got it to Sam Simononis who drained a three from the right corner.
The Seawolves return to action on Saturday, traveling to take on New Hampshire. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
