"We appreciate Cesar’s efforts in developing our men’s soccer program into one of the premier programs in New York and in the America East Conference,” Fiore said. "I thank Cesar for all of his efforts on behalf of Stony Brook and wish him and his family all the best as he pursues future endeavors. With an incredibly talented team returning in 2011, including two All-Conference players, our next head coach will be in a position to maintain our level of success and contend for an America East Conference championship."
Markovic spent seven seasons as the head coach at Stony Brook, winning the America East Conference championship and earning an NCAA Tournament berth in both 2005 and 2009. The Seawolves advanced to the second round of the 2005 NCAA Tournament with a win over Yale. In recognition of the team’s success, he was honored as the 2005 BigAppleSoccer.com Coach of the Year. While at Stony Brook, he compiled a 58-59-22 overall record and a 24-20-10 mark in the America East during his seven seasons.
Markovic had a reputation of attracting strong talent to Stony Brook from around the country and throughout the world and for developing them into All-Conference players. Under his leadership, Stony Brook produced six NSCAA All-Region and 18 All-America East Conference selections, including Rookie of the Year and Midfielder of the Year honorees. Nine of his former student-athletes have gone on to sign professional soccer contracts.
"I want to thank Jim Fiore and Stony Brook University for the opportunity to coach at this fine institution," Markovic said. "It has been an incredible seven years and I am proud of all that that we have achieved. With the outstanding facilities, exceptional student-athletes and administrative support that exists at Stony Brook, I know that the men’s soccer program will continue to achieve great success in the years ahead."
