Running Backs Key In Offense's 41-12 Spring Game Win


Sophomore running back Edwin Gowins (Bellport, N.Y.) had five carries for 65 yards, including a 48-yard run in the first-half. Freshman Miguel Maysonet (Riverhead, N.Y.) tallied 47 yards, a large chunk coming on a 21-yard scamper for a touchdown. Sophomore Brock Jackolski (Shirley, N.Y.) also ran for a touchdown, and caught three balls for 27 yards in addition to six carries for 43 yards.

Coulter, who finished the afternoon 13 of 26 for 132 yards, threw an eight-yard touchdown pass to junior Michael Lepore (Brick, N.J.). Sophomore Matthew Brevi (Tampa, Fla.) caught five passes for 60 yards.

Redshirt freshman Wesley Skiffington (Brandon, Fla.) kicked a 49-yard field goal.

Defensively, freshman Taj Johnson (Upland, Calif.) led all players with seven tackles. Junior Jonas Rousseau (Brooklyn, N.Y.) had a nice afternoon, finishing with six tackles and one sack. Sophomore Michael Marino (Middle Island, N.Y.) made the play of the day, intercepting a screen pass with 1:56 left in the first half.



Senior Julian Glenn (Uniondale, N.Y.), sophomore Corey Stringer (Warren, Ohio) and freshman Kenny Tuiloma (Long Beach, Calif.) each made five tackles. Stringer recorded two pass break-ups.

Junior Roosevelt Kirk (Oakland, Calif.) had three tackles, including a sack, and a pass break-up.

After the game, Stony Brook held its annual banquet as individual awards and the Big South Championship rings were handed out.

The Offensive MVP went to sophomore Edwin Gowins (Bellport, N.Y.). Gowins led Stony Brook with 890 yards and nine touchdowns en route to earning first team All-Big South honors for the second year in a row. He ran for 165 yards and three touchdowns in the Seawolves' 36-33 win over Liberty, which clinched the Big South Championship.

Senior linebacker Tyler Santucci (New Kensington, Pa.) was named the team's Defensive MVP for the second straight season. He was named a second-team All-American by the Associated Press after totaling 93 tackles and 14 tackles for a loss. Santucci also picked up first-team All-Big South honors and Big South Defensive Player of the Year. His 145 solo tackles are tied for the most in school history.

Redshirt freshman Wesley Skiffington (Brandon, Fla.) earned the Ray Downey Special Teams MVP. Skiffington went 15-for-17 on field goals and 26-for-30 on extra points. He was named the Big South Special Teams Player of the Week after connecting on two field goals at Colgate. He accounted for 16 points (4 PATs, 4 FGs) against Presbyterian en route to being named a College Sports News' National All-Star.

The Offensive Rookie of the Year went to freshman Jordan Gush (Richardson, Texas). Gush caught 26 passes for 413 yards and led all Big South receivers with six TDs. He was involved in the longest play of the season as Gush caught a 64-yard pass before scoring on a 10-yard reception to beat Liberty.

Freshman linebacker Kenny Tuiloma (Long Beach, Calif.) was named the Defensive Rookie of the Year. He played in all 11 games, earning a start against Massachusetts. He made 12 tackles and his interception set up a touchdown against the Minutemen. He finished the season with 31 tackles.

Santucci also earned the Fred Kemp Award, given to the upperclassman who is dedicated to excellence on and off the field, while leading the team with pride and intensity. The Mark Motroni Award, which goes to the upperclassman who demonstrates great pride in the Stony Brook football program and consistently exhibits unselfish dedication to the team, was awarded to senior Josh Auerbach (Langhorne, Pa).

Junior Paul Fenaroli (Monroe, Conn.) received the Workhouse Award and seniors Chris Tyler (Rocky Hill, Conn.) and Jefferson Santos (Irvine, Calif.) won the Academic Award, given to upperclassmen who are motivated and achieve success in the classroom.

Coach Priore also announced that Fenaroli, junior Arin West (Toms River, N.J.) and junior Stephen Schwicke (East Patchogue, N.Y.) will serve as team captains for the 2010 season.
