Stony Brook, N.Y. - Sophomore Bryan Dougher (Scotch Plains, N.J.) scored a game-high 26 points and senior Muhammad El-Amin (Lansing, Mich.) added 20 as the Stony Brook University men's basketball team opened the second half with a 17-0 run on its way to a 70-59 victory over the Hartford Hawks on Thursday night at Pritchard Gymnasium. Stony Brook improves to 10-5 overall and 2-0 in the America East with the victory. It is the Seawolves first 2-0 start in conference play since joining the America East in 2001-02.
"It was a tale of two halves," Stony Brook head coach Steve Pikiell said. "We didn't play the way we're capable of in the first half. But I like the fact that we came out ready to play in the second half and did what we were supposed to defensively against a very dangerous offensive basketball team in Hartford."
Stony Brook's America East Player of the Game, Dougher went 5-for-7 from three-point land and 7-for-8 from the free throw line. Dougher is shooting 71 percent (22-for-31) from three-point land over the Seawolves last four games. After shooting just two free throws in the first half, Stony Brook went 27-for-38 from the line in the final 20 minutes.
El-Amin went 11-for-12 from the foul line for the Seawolves, who shot 50 percent from the field in the second half. Sophomore Dallis Joyner (Norfolk, Va.) grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds while junior Chris Martin (Springfield Gardens, N.Y.) chipped in with 11 points. Joe Zeglinski led the Hawks (2-12, 0-1 AE) with 22 points and was named Hartford's America East Player of the Game.

The Seawolves trailed 23-20 at halftime but took control of the game at the start of the second half, scoring the first 17 points of the period to take a 37-23 lead. The Seawolves held the Hawks without a point in the second half until Zeglinksi hit two free throws with 10:47 remaining in the game to cut the Stony Brook lead to 37-25.
Dougher scored seven points during that stretch for Stony Brook, which notched 11 of their 17 points from the foul line during the run. A Zeglinski three midway through half trimmed the Stony Brook lead to 39-28 but Martin hit one of two free throws and sophomore Danny Carter (London, England) then drilled a three to push the SBU lead up to 15.
The Seawolves lead would grow to as much as 17 on Dougher's fifth triple of the game with 4:45 left in the game. The Hawks came within 10 on a Morgan Sabia three-pointer with 1:57 remaining but that as is as close as they would get as the Seawolves hit five free throws over the final minute and a half to seal its third straight victory.
SBU jumped to an 8-2 lead in the early going with the help of three-pointers from freshman Marcus Rouse (Upper Marlboro, Md.) and Dougher. Stony Brook still lead by five just over seven minutes into the game before Dougher nailed his second three of the game to push the SBU advantage to 14-6.
Stony Brook struggled to score over the next several minutes as Hartford scored eight straight points to tie the game at 14 with seven minutes left in the half. But El-Amin answered with an acrobatic lay-up and Dougher followed with a runner in the lane to put SBU back on top by four.
Hartford ran off seven straight points over the next three minutes though to jump in front 21-18 with three minutes remaining in the half. El-Amin drew Stony Brook to within one with a fade-away jumper from the right wing but Charles White responded with a driving lay-up to send Hartford into the break with the 23-20 lead.
Stony Brook returns to action on Sunday, hosting New Hampshire at Pritchard Gymnasium. Game time is set for 2 p.m. For ticket information go to www.goseawolves.org or call 631-632-WOLF.
