Dougher's Career Day Leads Men's Basketball To 84-75 Victory Over Boston University in America East Opener

Boston, Mass. - Sophomore Bryan Dougher (Scotch Plains, N.J.) scored a career-high 30 points, including a career-best eight three-pointers, to lead the Stony Brook University men's basketball team to an 84-75 victory over the Boston University Terriers in the America East opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon at Case Gymnasium. Stony Brook improves to 9-5 overall and 1-0 in the America East while BU falls to 5-8 and 0-1.
"What a terrific win on the road against a very good Boston University team," Stony Brook head coach Steve Pikiell. "We played with great energy and our execution, especially down the stretch, was very good.
Dougher scored 21 of his 30 points in the second half for the Seawolves, who hit a season high 12 three-pointers. Senior Muhammad El-Amin (Lansing, Mich.) added 23 points and eight rebounds, while sophomore Tommy Brenton (Columbia, Md.) chipped in with 15 points, 11 rebounds and five assists.
It was the first ever regular season victory at Case Gymnasium for Stony Brook, which shot a season-high 48.1 percent from the field. Jake O'Brien scored 27 points to lead the Terriers.
The Seawolves jumped to a 10-2 lead just over three minutes in behind six early points from El-Amin and four from Brenton. The Terriers rallied to take a 23-16 lead with 12 minutes remaining in the half following a three from John Holland but the Seawolves answered with six straight points, including two long jumpers from freshman Marcus Rouse (Upper Marlboro, Md.), to draw SBU within one midway through the half.
Tyler Morris scored on a driving layup to push the BU lead back to three but Brenton then knocked down a three from the right side to tie the game at 25. Dougher gave the Seawolves the lead a minute later as he knocked down back-to-back threes following a John Holland hoop to give Stony Brook a four point advantage.

BU regained the lead on a Carlos Strong three but Dougher drilled his third three of the half to give SBU a 34-32 lead with four minutes to go in the half. The Seawolves eventually built the lead to four on two free throws from freshman Preye Preboye (Springfield, Mass.) before Jake O'Brien knocked down a three to cut the SBU lead back to one.
An El-Amin three-point play with just over a minute remaining sent SBU into the break with a 41-37 lead. The Seawolves shot 48.4 percent in the half and knocked down seven of their 11 three-point attempts.
Stony Brook built its lead to six early in the second half on a thunderous put-back dunk from sophomore Dallis Joyner (Norfolk, Va.). The Terriers cut the Stony Brook advantage to two on a three from Strong but Brenton then hit one of two free throws and Dougher followed with a three to put the Seawolves back up by six with 13:37 remaining in the game.
Strong scored on a fade-away jumper to cut the SBU lead back to four but Dougher knocked down a long three and then hit one of two free throws to give SBU a 56-48 advantage. O'Brien scored four straight points to cut the Seawolves lead to four but Dougher drilled back-to-back threes to push the Stony Brook lead to 10.
The Seawolves lead grew to 13 on a driving lay-up from El-Amin with six minutes left and Dougher then followed with his eighth three of the game to put SBU up 70-54. The Terriers closed within eight with under two minutes left but junior Chris Martin (Springfield Gardens, N.Y.) and Dougher knocked down two free throws each to seal the victory for SBU.
