Seawolves Back on the Road To Challenge 15th Ranked Minutemen

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Stony Brook will look to carry the momentum of a successful home opener back onto the road this week as the Seawolves will make the trek north to take on #15 Massachusetts. Stony Brook, which is look¬ing for its first road win of the season, will be playing away from home for the third time in four games this week. The task ahead will be a challenging one for the Seawolves, who have yet to defeat a team ranked in the top-25 since their move to FCS football in 2001. Stony Brook made a step in the right direction last week, coming from behind with a touchdown in the final minute to down Brown, 21-20. It was the first-ever victory for Stony Brook over an Ivy League team. Michael Coulter hit Donald Porter for the game-winner from 10 yards out with 47 seconds left last week to claim the win over the Bears. Coulter has now hit nearly 60 percent of his passes this season while throwing for nearly 500 yards. Matt Brevi had a career night for SBU, returning three kickoffs for 140 yards and leading the team with five receptions for 76 yards.
The Opponent
Massachusetts has rebounded from a close loss at Kansas State in its season opener to win two straight and improve to 2-1 after a 30-10 win over Rhode Island at home in its first CAA game of the season. The Minutemen, ranked #15 this week in the national polls, saw quarter¬back Kyle Havens throw for 329 yards and two scores while running back Tony Nelson went for 158 yards in a score while its defense held the Rams to 267 yards and no offensive touchdowns. The Minutemen, who have won three straight and six of their last eight at home, are averaging 392 yards of offense. Nelson averages 114 yards per game on the ground while Havens has averaged nearly 240 yards per outing through the air. Defensively UMass has allowed a total of 17 points over the last two games.

The Series
This will be only the second meeting between Stony Brook and Massa¬chusetts, with the first occurring three years ago when the Minutemen took a 48-7 win in Amherst. Stony Brook, which found itself in a 28-0 hole in the first quarter, could only generate 182 yards of offense in the setback. This will be the second meeting of the season against a CAA squad for the Seawolves, who have played a game against that league in each of the past five seasons. Stony Brook is 1-10 against CAA teams in that time, with the lone win coming against Maine in 2007.
