Stony Brook picked Second in 2013 Women's Soccer Preaseason poll
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — After finishing second in the America East women’s soccer standings last year, the University of Hartford has been picked as the favorite in the 2013 preseason coaches’ poll, the conference office announced on Tuesday afternoon. The voting was conducted by the conference’s nine head coaches, who were not permitted to vote for their own teams.
The Hawks edged out reigning America East tournament champions, Stony Brook, by just two points, receiving five first-place votes and 61 points compared to four first-place votes and 59 points for the Seawolves.
University of Maine came in third with 49 points, followed by University of Vermont in fourth with 38 points and University of New Hampshire in fifth with 35 points. University at Albany edged out Binghamton University in sixth by only one point, receiving 29 and 28 points respectively. UMBC (15) and UMass Lowell (8) rounded out the nine-team poll.
The six-team America East Championship begins with quarterfinal action on Oct. 31 and continues with the semifinal round on Nov. 3. The conference champion will be crowned on either Nov. 9 or 10 with the winner of the tournament receiving an automatic bid to the NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship, where America East teams have 11 all-time wins.
Hartford is coming off an 11-5-3 mark last season, including 6-2-0 in conference play before falling to Stony Brook, 1-0, in the America East title game. The Hawks will have to replace eight seniors, including stanout Amelia Pereira who scored 13 goals and totaled 33 points to lead the conference last season. Also among those seniors was goalkeeper Erin Quinlan, who allowed just 21 goals in 37 career games. Sophomore forward Elise Galipo is the team’s top-returning offensive threat, totaling four goals and three assists last season. She is joined by senior returners Arielle Aikens and Raelynn Mikell while the Hawks welcome 13 new faces. Hartford begins the year Aug. 23 at home against Bryant.
Stony Brook (12-7-3, 3-4-1) became the first No. 6 seed and the second-lowest seed in any America East sport to capture a conference title, beating Hartford on the road, 1-0. The Seawolves bring back a very strong core including All-Conference Second Team selections in forward Larissa Nysch and defender Ahriel Fernandez. Also returning are All-Rookie performers Tessa Deveraux and Raven Edwards. Stony Brook led the conference in scoring, averaging 1.64 goals per game, with Nysch pacing the attack with nine goals and four assists. The Seawolves open the season on the road at Seton Hall on Aug. 23 at 7 p.m.
Maine (7-7-3, 3-3-2) finished third in the regular-season in 2012, its highest finish since 2009. The Black Bears also earned their first major award since 2009 when Charlene Achille was named Rookie of the Year. Also an All-Conference Second Team selection, she finished the year with two goals and three assists while controlling the midfield for Maine. Joining Achille on the All-Rookie team was teammate Noelle Leon-Palmer, who started all 17 games as a defender. Maine opens the season against Holy Cross on Aug. 23 at Deering High School in Portland.
Vermont (4-13-2, 3-4-1) qualified for the America East Championship for the second-straight year after missing the conference tournament four-straight seasons. The Catamounts kick-off the season by hosting the TD Bank Classic at Virtue Field, hosting Sacred Heart at 4 p.m. on Aug. 23. Vermont earned its first win in the America East Championship, defeating Albany in penalty kicks in the quarterfinals before falling to Hartford in the semifinals.
New Hampshire (5-12-2, 3-4-1), under first-year head coach Sam Lopes, is looking to advance in the America East Championship for the first time since 2006 despite qualifying for the playoffs in each of the last five seasons. All-Rookie selection Kirstyn Corder is the team’s top returning scorer, tallying five goals and three assists last year.
Albany (6-10-3, 3-4-1) enters its first season under head coach Caitlin Colfer who will begin her tenure with the Great Danes on Aug. 23 at Florida Atlantic. She inherits a team that earned the No. 5 seed in the 2012 America East Championship, falling on the road at Vermont in penalty kicks. Albany welcomes 13 newcomers to go wtih 15 returning players for 2013.
Binghamton (8-8-1, 2-5-1) has reached the semifinals four times in six years but did not qualify for the America East Championship last season. The Bearcats open the season on the road at Siena on Aug. 25.
UMBC (1-11-5, 0-5-3) beings its second season under Leslie Wray, who returns nine starters and 14 letterwinners, including All-Conference Second Team goalkeeper Lauren Kadet and All-Rookie Team honoree Amira Walcott.
UMass Lowell begins its first season at the Division I level with six returning starters and 15 letterwinners. The River Hawks start their new era of Division I play on Aug. 29 at Marist College. On the slate also is a 2012 regular season co-champion, one tournament champion, two conference runners-up and three of the top six teams in the Ivy League.

Series History: Stony Brook leads 1-0
Last Meeting: Stony Brook 20, Villanova 10 (2012). The tone of last season's first-round playoff game against Villanova was set on Stony Brook's first offensive series. Starting for their own two-yard line, the Seawolves drove 98 yards, taking up almost 13 minutes of game action. Miguel Maysonet and Marcus Coker each rushed for more than 100 yards. Davonte Anderson had two interceptions.
Scouting the Offense: Sophomore John Robertson, who earned the Jerry Rice Award, given to the nation's top FCS freshman, returns as the starting quarterback. He recorded nearly 3,000 yards of total offense and 33 touchdowns (19 passing). Villanova will feature two strong running backs in juniors Kevin Monangai and Austin Medley. The duo combined for 1,900 yards and 15 touchdowns. Senior Joe Price steps in for Norman White as the team's top receiver. Villanova has a lot of depth on its offensive line and features six players who have started in previous seasons.
Scouting the Defense: Seniors Antoine Lewis and Rakim Cox, who earned first team All-CAA honors last season, are the strength of the defensive line. Senior Pat Haggerty and sophomore Don Cherry likely are two of the three starting linebackers in Villanova's 3-3-5 formation. Junior Dillon Lucas, the 2011 CAA Defensive Rookie of the Year, will battle for the third spot with junior Joey Harmon. The Wildcats' secondary is deep and talented and will be led by senior Craig James and junior Joe Sarnese. Sophomore Matt McCann could start at strong safety.

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Seven games against teams that advanced to national postseason tournaments in 2013, a trip to Madison Square Garden and an appearance in a national preseason tournament highlight the Stony Brook men's basketball team's 2013-14 non-conference schedule, which includes games against Big Ten member Indiana and Atlantic 10 teams La Salle and VCU, head coach Steve Pikiell announced Tuesday.
"Our non-conference schedule has an excellent mix of high-profile opponents, teams with recent postseason success and rivals from the New York City area," Pikiell said. "We are excited to be facing quality opponents day in and day out, and we expect this competitive schedule will help us prepare for the America East conference schedule and the America East Championship. We are also honored to once again be invited to play at Madison Square Garden, the mecca of college basketball, and to be invited to participate in the 2K Sports Classic, which supports a worthy cause."
In total, seven of Stony Brook's 14 Div. I opponents won 20 or more games last season. Two of them played in the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 and a third was in the NCAA Tournament Round of 32.
The 2013-14 regular season will commence at the friendly confines of historic Pritchard Gymnasium as the team plays its final season there before moving to Stony Brook Arena, Long Island's newest athletic and entertainment destination. The Seawolves play Marist in their home opener Friday, Nov. 8. The team will then host Haverford College on Nov. 10 and defending CAA regular season champion Northeastern Nov. 13. The Huskies took the CAA crown with a 14-4 conference record and advanced to the NIT for the third time in program history.
Stony Brook will then participate in the 2K Sports Classic benefitting the Wounded Warrior Project. The tournament begins with a regional round at Indiana on Nov. 17. The Seawolves will face the defending Big Ten regular season champion Hoosiers at Assembly Hall for the second time in three seasons. The Hoosiers finished 2012-13 with a 29-7 record and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16.
The Seawolves will then move on to a subregional of the 2K Sports Classic on the University of Detroit Mercy campus. Stony Brook will face Toledo, Florida Atlantic and host Detroit, which was an NIT team in 2013, on back-to-back-to-back days Nov. 22-24.
Stony Brook concludes the month of November with a road game at Canisius Nov. 26. The Golden Griffins, whom the Seawolves defeated at home last season, were a 20-win team in 2012-13 and advanced to the quarterfinals of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament.
Stony Brook opens December with home contests against St. Francis Brooklyn (Dec. 1) and Fairleigh Dickinson (Dec. 4). The Seawolves will then head back to Madison Square Garden to play La Salle as part of the MSG Holiday Festival, Stony Brook's second appearance at The Garden in the last three seasons. The Explorers made noise in 2012-13 by advancing to the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 as a 13-seed. The 11 a.m. game at The Garden will be followed by St. John's vs. Fordham.
Following a break for final exams, the Seawolves resume action at Loyola Maryland on Dec. 19 against a Greyhounds squad that won 23 games and advanced to the CollegeInsider.com Tournament quarterfinals last season. Stony Brook will then play its final game of the month Dec. 22 at home against Cornell.
The Seawolves wrap up the non-conference slate Jan. 3 at VCU and Jan. 8 at Columbia. Stony Brook will face a Rams team that won 27 games and advanced to the NCAA Tournament third round last season.
Pikiell is entering his ninth season as head coach and recently signed a contract extension that will keep him at Stony Brook through the 2017-18 season. He returns seven letterwinners and three redshirt freshmen from last season's team that went 25-8, captured the America East regular season championship for the third time in four seasons and advanced to the second round of the NIT.
The entire 2013-14 Seawolves schedule, including the 16-game America East slate, will be released on a later date.
The Stony Brook ticket office is currently accepting deposits for 2013-14 season tickets. All active men's basketball season ticket holders will have priority access to tickets to the new Stony Brook Arena, which will open for the 2014-15 season. Stony Brook, Hofstra, and the CAA....

When given the chance, journalists love to speculate. Turn on ESPN or open Sports Illustrated, and chances are, you will see just as much speculation as you do fact.
When given the chance, journalists love to speculate. Turn on ESPN or open Sports Illustrated, and chances are, you will see just as much speculation as you do fact.
True to form, when the Colonial Athletic Association rumor mill began spinning last year, journalists and fans alike up and down the East Coast began speculating about the fate of commissioner Tom Yeager and the CAA.
Would the CAA be able to withstand the loss of Virginia Commonwealth, Old Dominion, George Mason and Georgia State? College of Charleston was a nice add, but would Davidson join the group? Who else would the CAA consider as a possible addition? Would James Madison and William & Mary — two cornerstones of the league — jump ship as well? Would the CAA’s football and basketball leagues be able to coexist peacefully under the same formula?
While some of those questions remain to be answered (looking at you, JMU), others have been answered as a result of emails uncovered through a Freedom of Information Act request. We now know for certain — without any speculation — that the conference heavily courted Davidson, Elon, Stony Brook and Albany (as all-sports members) among others.
One of the most interesting (and unexpected) things we learned was how Hofstra president Stuart Rabinowitz steadfastly opposed the addition of Stony Brook as an all-sports member. After receiving a recommendation to pursue membership for Davidson, Elon and Stony Brook, Rabinowitz announced his displeasure with the report in an email to the CAA presidents.
As a blog primarily focused on William & Mary, we were initially unaware of the rivalry and history between Hofstra and Stony Brook. The section of the story concerning Hofstra and Stony Brook has caused a mini-firestorm on Long Island, where both schools reside. The long-held speculation that Hofstra was blocking Stony Brook from entering the CAA — and theoretically competing for the same media attention — now has some serious validity.

Series History: Buffalo leads 1-0
Last Meeting: Buffalo 35, Stony Brook 7. Branden Oliver, a senior on this year's team, rushed for three touchdowns. The Seawolves tied the game at 7 after a 16-yard touchdown catch by Jordan Gush '13. The Bulls scored 28 unanswered points and forced two second-half turnovers.
Scouting the Offense: Buffalo should feature one of the MAC's top offenses this season, with every offensive skill-position starter from a year ago returning. At quarterback, sophomore Joe Licata and senior Alex Zordich, a dual-threat, are experience starters, combining to pass for nearly 2,300 yards and 16 touchdowns last season. The aforementioned Oliver missed five games a year ago, but still rushed for 821 yards. Devin Campbell, a true freshman last season, made an immediate impact with 502 yards. Seniors Alex Neutz and Fred Lee likely are starters at wide receiver. Senior Alex Dennison (57-yard TD vs. Stony Brook in '11) will lineup at running back and quarterback in Buffalo's "Alley-Cat" Formation. The offensive line returns three starters.
Scouting the Defense: Senior Khalil Mack could be a first-day NFL draft pick. The All-American linebacker finished his junior season with 94 tackles, including 21 for loss, and eight sacks, all team-highs. The defensive line has depth, led by senior Colby Wray (58 tackles, 10.5 TFLs, 7 sacks). Last season, Buffalo ranked second in the MAC in pass defense, allowing 206 yards per game. Junior Najja Johnson and senior Cortney Lester were outstanding defensive backs. Johnson led the MAC in interceptions.

Outlook
Stony Brook's 2010 season opener at South Florida, its first FBS game, was a rough game to start to the season. On the bright side, the outcome forced head coach Chuck Priore and his staff to play true freshmen. Three year later, the plan clearly worked. Priore essentially has three starting linebackers entering the first season of CAA Football competition.
Pressed into action in just his second collegiate game, senior Jawara Dudley has made the most of his time at Stony Brook, playing in each of the last 36 games, including 31 starts. A two-time first team All-Big South Conference selection, Dudley statistically ranks as one of the top linebackers in program history. Entering 2013, Dudley ranks sixth in Stony Brook's Division I history with 201 total tackles.
Senior Reginald Francklin started Stony Brook's first FBS game against South Florida, but suffered an injury against the Bulls and was lost for the season. Since then, Francklin has solidified his spot as a starting middle linebacker. He made a career-high 10 tackles against Army and recorded an interception against Charleston Southern last season.
Senior Grant Nakwaasah joined Dudley to make their first collegiate appearances against American International in 2010. Nakwaasah has appeared in all but one game during that time, and has recorded 147 tackles in 35 games. He's also tallied 16.5 tackles for loss.
According to Priore, Dudley, Francklin and Nakwaasah will rotate equally.
Sophomores Julian Quintin and Jeremy Leggiero add depth. Quintin played in all 13 games last season, with most of his time coming on special teams. Leggiero saw limited action last season.
Final Thoughts
The group of linebackers is the strength of defense in 2013. Having the luxury of three players, all of whom could start, will be beneficial.

Series History: first meeting
Scouting the Offense: Senior quarterback Bob Bentsen returns as the starter in 2013 after passing for 1,553 yards and seven touchdowns last season. One of the strengths of the offense figures to be the offensive line, which returns three starters, including junior Andrew Kestenbaum, who started all 11 games last season. The Rams' top rusher, junior Jordan Sebastian, totaled 291 yards, including 88 against New Hampshire. At wide receiver, Rhode Island was hit hard by graduation. Its top returner is senior Robbie Jackson (18 rec., 245 yds., 1 TD), who hauled in a team-long 77-yard reception.
Scouting the Defense: Similiar to Stony Brook, the strength of Rhode Island's defense lies with its linebackers. Preseason All-CAA junior Andrew Bose, a third-team selection last season, made 86 tackles to lead the team. The LBs include seniors Dave Zocco (99 tackles, 13 TFLs in '11) and Doug Johnson (third team All-CAA in '11) and sophomore Connor Caponegro (30 tackles, 2 PBUs). Senior Josh Moody and junior James Timmins lead the defensive line. The Rams' secondary is the team's deepest position. Seniors Jamaal Bess (44 tackles, 4 PBUs), Mackenzie Elliott (54 tackles, 4 PBUs, 2 FFs, 1 INT) and André Scott (48 tackles) will lead the unit.

Outlook
With the graduation of one of the most prolific players in program history, most schools would struggle to replace the production. Not Stony Brook. The two-deep will feature two FBS transfers, a redshirt sophomore and a junior college transfer, three of whom will compete for the No. 2 spot.
Miguel Maysonet '13 rushed for 1,964 yards and 21 touchdowns, becoming the Stony Brook and Big South Conference's all-time leading rusher. Having taken his talent to the NFL, the bulk of the work, according to head coach Chuck Priore, will be given to senior Marcus Coker.
Coker, who transferred from the University of Iowa in January 2012, teamed with Maysonet to feature two 1,000-yard rushers for a program-best third straight year. Coker recorded three 100-yard games, including a season-high 144 against Presbyterian. In the first-round playoff game against Villanova, Coker ran the ball a season-high 29 times, and was instrumental in a 21-play, 98-yard drive that took up a staggering 12:43 time of possession.
"I personally believe he has the ability to handle 25 to 30 carries a game," Priore said. "In the last five games of 2012, I thought he returned to the form he showed at Iowa."
With Coker returning as the No. 1 running back, competing for Coker's back-up in Priore's two-back rotation will be between Jamie Williams, James Kenner and Jameel Poteat.
Despite rushing only 23 times last season, Williams actually led Stony Brook in yards per game (9.9), helped by a 144-yard performance against Pace.
A transfer from ASA College in Brooklyn, Kenner was the Avengers' No. 2 back last season, but still rushed for 676 yards and eight touchdowns in only nine games.
The depth of the position will be bolstered by Poteat. A transfer from the University of Cincinnati, Poteat played in 11 games last year, rushing 34 times for 119 yards and a touchdown. As a prep standout at Bishop McDevitt in Harrisburg, Pa., Poteat was a consensus four-star recruit and top-100 player in the nation, recruited by the likes of USC, Tennessee and Notre Dame before choosing Cincinnati.
Final Thoughts
While Maysonet and Coker shared the majority of carries last season in a 1/1A rotation, the majority of game experience lies with Coker, who will be the featured back. For the next 30 days, the competition between the other three running backs will be exciting.
