Stony Brook tops Penn in Saturday's scrimmage, 17-3

Stony Brook, N.Y. - In its final preseason tune-up, the Stony Brook football team beat Penn, 17-3, in a scrimmage at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium on Saturday. Sophomore Jamie Williams (Hamilton, N.J.) had a 45-yard touchdown run and junior Will Tye (Middletown, Conn.) hauled in a 54-yard TD pass from senior Lyle Negron (Bakersfield, Calif.).
"I was really please with today's outcome," coach Chuck Priore said. "A couple of things that stood out in my mind were our pass rush and Lyle's ability to throw the ball. We're healthy and we accomplished what our goals were. I like where we stand heading into next Saturday."
After a controlled scrimmage in the first half, Stony Brook and Penn went 11-on-11 in the second half.
The Seawolves' defense, especially up front, was very strong early on against the Quakers. Stony Brook totaled five sacks on the day, including three from senior Dimetrius Bernard (Jamaica, N.Y.).
Williams put Stony Brook on the board on the ninth play of the first drive. Williams went off left tackle down the left side for the score. Senior Devante Wheeler (Staten Island, N.Y.) keyed the score with some solid downfield blocking.
Penn drove the ball inside the 10-yard on its next possession, but on third and goal from the three, junior Zedrick Gardner (Miami, Fla.) broke up a pass, forcing a field goal, which Penn made, cutting the Stony Brook lead to 7-3.

Stony Brook's drive stalled on its next series, but solid special teams play from Wheeler forced Penn to start on the one-yard line.
Senior Nick Ferrara(Hicksville, N.Y.) connected for a 24-yard field goal on Stony Brook's next drive.
After a three-and-out from the Quakers, two penalties pushed Stony Brook to the Stony Brook 46. On third and 11, Negron found Tye on a crossing route and Tye went untouched into the end zone for the score.
Negron finished the game 6 of 9 for 117 yards. Williams totaled 51 rushing yards.
The 2013 season gets underway on Saturday, September 7 at Rhode Island. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
